“Bone Necklace is an exquisite, meticulously researched, culturally and historically authentic, and flat-out heart wrenching book.”

Authority Magazine

“Native American history is too often portrayed as a tragedy — as if some fatal flaw in the character of the Native American race doomed them to a terrible fate. It’s a narrative that places the moral blame for the government’s shameful treatment of Native nations squarely on the victims. Bone Necklace confronts that lie.”

BHP Book Club

“Bone Necklace may just be your next great read”

“We need more stories like this”

“In 2020, nearly 150 years after the war, the Nez Perce returned to Joseph, Oregon, inspiring refugees everywhere.”

Books By Women

“Nicole and her husband, a geologist, are touring Yellowstone Park when the Nez Perce ride through, full of fury after a bloody battle on the Big Hole River. Nicole’s husband, Witt, is killed, and she is taken hostage along with the couple’s guide, Mr. Ford. In this excerpt from the book, Nicole and the guide have just been released after traveling for nearly a month with the tribe.”

Breakout Room

With Andy Charles

“Julia has represented inmates on death row, undocumented immigrants, and victims of domestic and elder abuse. She provided countless hours of pro bono work as Executive Director and Chairman of the Board of MAIP (Mid-Atlantic Innocence Project). Her focus has been on righting the scales in a system where corporations or the very wealthy often have the upper hand – while lower-income individuals frequently had their entire lives destroyed by a system that often fails the most fragile.”

Deprogram

“I was awestruck and inspired and overcome with sadness at the same time

East Idaho News

“This story was appealing to me because it shatters our assumptions about Native American culture and the inevitability of conflict during America’s western expansion.”

“Sullivan’s journey really started at the age of 10, when she witnessed a grave injustice committed against a close family member. While most bloom into adulthood without realizing their calling, Sullivan knew as a child. You could say that, since the 4th grade, Sullivan has aspired to lend her voice to those whose paths have been thwarted by the darkness of injustice.”

Girl Talk HQ

“In times of war, it is usually the women who must flee for safety with their children. In Bone Necklace, we meet two women on opposite sides of the war, each one running for her life.”

Hasty Book List

“What book character would I like to be stuck in an elevator with? That's easy. Gus McCrae, from Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove. Favorite Gus quote: ‘If you want one thing too much it’s likely to be a disappointment. The healthy way is to learn to like the everyday things, like soft beds and buttermilk.’”

Histocrats

“When I’m trying to solve a problem – whether it’s a legal problem, a business problem, or a family problem – I always start with the same question: what’s worked in the past and what hasn’t? Without some basic understanding of history, it’s very hard to move forward.”

Hub Pages

“It is interesting that few accounts of the war, then or now, acknowledge that a large portion of the tribe never surrendered. The Nez Perce who escaped with White Bird – representing more than 40% of the tribe – were never defeated. What’s more, they lived in Canada in peace – suggesting that there was nothing inevitable about the conflict that had cost so many lives.”

Lost In The Translation

“What happens when an Army soldier raised as a white man comes face to face with his brother, a Nez Perce warrior who is fighting to protect his people? BONE NECKLACE is filled with thoroughly researched history from the National Archives woven into a fictional narrative with the objective of showing how the Nez Perce were compassionate people — with exceptional skills in evading four converging armies — whose truth has not received justice in our history.”

Two things fascinated me about the Nez Perce War of 1877. First, it was a David & Goliath fight featuring the rise of an unexpected Native American leader, who would later become known as the “Red Napoleon.” Second, it had an unexpected ending. While many Nez Perce were captured or killed, nearly 40% of the refugees escaped to Canada, and were given political asylum. I found that extraordinary.

“As a lawyer, Sullivan couldn't help but notice how justice seemed to only be afforded to corporations or the very wealthy – while lower-income individuals frequently had their entire lives destroyed by a system meant to treat everyone fairly. The through line between Sullivan's work as an attorney and her expertise on the Nez Perce War, as expressed in Bone Necklace, is her passion for justice.”

Positive Talk Radio

“The U.S. Army field commander, General Oliver ‘Uh Oh’ Howard, had promised to make ‘short work’ of the Nez Perce. Instead, for four months, he pursued them across 1,100 miles of Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana, only to be humiliated in the end.”

Reading and Writing Podcast

With Jeff Rutherford

“Chief Joseph became known as the ‘Red Napoleon,’ which surprised nobody so much as Joseph himself. He would have done anything to avoid the war that made him famous.”

Trient Press Magazine

“As a lawyer, I have always been drawn to stories of injustice. I also loved the fact that, while the Nez Perce story has iconic elements, it doesn’t end the way people might expect. The Nez Perce emerge, if not victorious, then certainly not beaten. I found that inspiring.”
